By adopting the hygiene package, the European Union [pop up] establishes for European agri-food industrials the obligation to adopt traceability procedures, in the aim of guaranteeing a high level of food safety for consumers. This regulation leaves operators free to choose the methods they implement to guarantee this high level of safety and quality.
In parallel, the CE/1935/2004 regulation concerning active and smart packaging provides a framework for new developments within this field.
Consumers are also highly alert to traceability issues and increasingly demand more information on the quality and safety of the products that they purchase. A study conducted in 2005 showed that 80% of French people had already heard of traceability and that 54 % felt that they had not heard it discussed enough.
